How Facial Fillers Work
Facial fillers are a great way to get a natural, youthful look without “going under the knife.” Dr. Alan Greenberg at North Texas Cosmetic Surgery uses facial fillers Juvederm® and Expression® to help temporarily decrease the appearance of wrinkles.
Your Skin Over Time
The skin consists of two layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis, the top layer, protects the skin from external environment and controls the loss of water from the cells and tissue. The primary component of the second layer, the dermis, includes collagen that supports the skin and gives it its strength and elasticity.
Over time, aging thins the epidermis, and your skin begins to retain less water. The collagen in the dermis not only becomes less effective, but the production actually slows. The overall result is that the skin begins to lose its elasticity and strength, giving way to fine lines and wrinkles.
Facial Fillers Improve the Appearance of Aging Skin
Injected in the area under the skin, facial fillers plump the area around the injection site. Fillers like Juvederm® and Expression® are a hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found throughout the human body. Hyaluronic acid acts as a network that transfers essential nutrients from the bloodstream to skin cells. Because of its compatibility with the human body, hyaluronic acid is a good choice as a facial filler.
When a facial filler is injected, it plumps the area like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging. It also brings water to the surface of skin, giving a fresh and supple appearance.
Dr. Greenberg may suggest facial filler injections of Juvederm® or Expression® to provide the following benefits:
- Give your face a youthful, natural look
- Temporarily decrease wrinkles, fine lines and deep creases
- Improve the appearance of scars
- Fill out thin or wrinkled lips
- Give cheeks a fuller appearance
Facial filler injections can be performed in office at North Texas Cosmetic Surgery on an outpatient basis. During the procedure, Dr. Greenberg will give you a series of skin injections, depending upon your goal and the look you wish to achieve. Afterward, you can return to your regular routine right away, but it is suggested that you avoid sunlight and strenuous activity for at least 24 hours.
