According to research in the April issue of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal, patient outcomes are especially good with liposuction plus abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Conducted by Dr. Eric Swanson, a Kansas plastic surgeon, the study looked at 360 patients undergoing liposuction and/or abdominoplasty to remove abdominal fat. Of those patients, about 35 percent underwent a combination of liposuction and abdominoplasty, while 60 percent had only liposuction, and the rest had just a tummy tuck.
What the Research Found
Dr. Swanson concluded that patients who undergo cosmetic liposuction or abdominoplasty procedures experience significant improvements in self-esteem and quality of life. The study also indicated that liposuction with abdominoplasty produced the highest levels of satisfaction without an increase in pain compared to a tummy tuck by itself. Individuals who had only liposuction or just a tummy tuck rated their levels of satisfaction at 80 to 90 percent, compared with 99 percent for the combination procedure.
