Living with Breast Asymmetry? Find Balance in Cosmetic Surgery

25625390_sBreast size asymmetry occurs when a woman’s breasts are different in size. It is defined as a difference of form, position or volume of the breast. Although breast asymmetry affects more than half of all women, in most cases the difference is unnoticeable.

Dr. Alan Greenberg understands the emotional aspects of breast asymmetry: “It is a very common concern for woman, and one that can have a tremendous impact on a woman’s self-confidence.”

Correcting Breast Asymmetry

Slight differences in a woman’s breasts should not cause medical concern, and the condition is usually corrected surgically if the differences are greater than one bra cup size. With a difference of less than a cup size, most cosmetic surgeons would agree to a correction if:

  • A woman does not feel comfortable with the variance, or
  • She experiences some psychological problems due to breast asymmetry.

Cosmetic surgery is the only medically proven solution to breast asymmetry.

Cosmetic surgery for breast asymmetry is successful in most cases, and women tend to be satisfied with the results. Depending on the desired size and shape of the breast, Dr. Greenberg generally recommends either a breast augmentation on the smaller breast or a reduction on the larger.

Woman concerned about breast asymmetry should be aware of the associated risk for breast cancer. Women with breast asymmetry should routinely conduct careful self-breast exams, discuss this concern with their OB/GYN, and when the time is appropriate, be sure to get regular screening mammograms.
