A Brief Overview of the Sensa Weight Loss Program

Maintaining a healthy weight can impact your physical and emotional wellbeing. Not only will you improve your self-image, but you can reduce your risks for medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Dr. Greenberg supports his patients’ efforts to look and feel their best. If you want to lose weight, you need to choose a method that offers reasonable, safe steps and realistic results.

What is the Sensa Weight Loss Program?

Based on Dr. Alan Hirsch’s patent-pending Tastant Technology, the Sensa program works off the idea that the urge to eat is controlled by the satiety center of your brain. When you eat, smell and taste, receptors send messages to the brain, which releases hormones and triggers your body to feel full. Dr Hirsch states that with the Sensa Tastants, the perception of smell and taste are enhanced so that you don’t have the desire to overeat.

The Sensa shakers contain Salty and Sweet Tastants that you sprinkle on food accordingly. These Tastants don’t change the taste of the food at all, but help you eat less.

A Few Thoughts

Weight loss short cuts that promise of losing weight with little effort on our part seem to come and go. These trends entice those of us who have struggled with weight gain and/or obesity during our life time or as we have gotten older. We live in a society choosing to use food as a form of entertainment or to use food to help distract us from our feelings or our boredom.

When we are promised weight loss with minimal effort, we forget the long standing history of previous failed dietary miracle programs and supplements of the past.   Even with those programs or supplements that proved to work well initially, such as the Atkins or HCG diet, dietary suppressants, etc, it has been well documented these dietary aids only work during the limited length of time they are safe to be used.  Most dieters then tend to gain the weight they lost as soon as they get off the program or supplement. Why? Because we go right back to the way we were programmed to eat as soon as the diet fads are stopped.

For this reason I find myself skeptical of the new dietary product called Sensa. Sensa, along with Aroma Patch and SlimScents are scent-based weight-loss products that deliver aromas that are supposed to reduce your appetite. Sensa is sprinkled on your food. The Aroma Patch is worn on your hand, wrist or chest. SlimScents is inhaled through your nose before meals.

Alan Hirsch, M.D., who developed Sensa, says proof of its effectiveness comes from a six-month study he conducted in which participants lost an average of 15 percent of their body weight. The makers of Aroma Patch and SlimScents point to another study by Dr. Hirsh to bolster their claims. That study, which was reported in a medical journal, showed that volunteers who used an aroma inhaler lost an average of 2 percent of their body weight over six months.

Unfortunately, neither of these studies lasted longer than six months, so they didn’t look at whether participants were able to maintain the weight loss over time. This has been the problem with previous weight loss programs touting their success. Unless your goal is to lose weight for an isolated future event such as a wedding or class reunion, the only weight loss regimen proven to be successful long term is the tried and true method of combining exercise with eating smaller portions throughout the day.

So can these new aroma weight-loss products lead to significant, sustainable weight loss? The jury is still out on that question. Even some of the makers of these weight-loss products acknowledge that losing weight comes down to diet and exercise. My conclusion leads me to feel that it makes more sense, then, to skip the scents and focus on what’s proven to work long term— reducing the calories you eat and increasing the calories you burn through exercise.

Sometimes, weight loss isn’t enough to give you the results you desire. Once you have achieved your goal weight, you may want more. As a cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Greenberg can explain how options like a tummy tuck or liposuction can enhance your appearance.
