How does liposuction work?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical technique that loosens and removes fat cells using vacuum suction. The procedure removes excess fat deposits while leaving skin, muscle, and nearby organs intact.

During the treatment, Dr. Greenberg makes a tiny incision in your skin and inserts a hollow stainless steel cannula (tube) through it to reach the underlying fat layers. He typically removes fat cells from deep layers because treating superficial fat runs a higher risk of skin damage.

Dr. Greenberg numbs the area using tumescent anesthesia. He shifts the cannula around to break up fat cells so they’re easy to suction out.

Which areas can I treat with liposuction?

Liposuction is a highly customizable treatment, as you get to choose the areas of fat you want to target. Personalized liposuction can contour areas such as your:

  • Abdomen
  • Breasts
  • Hips
  • Back
  • Outer thighs (saddlebags)
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Inner thighs
  • Inner knees
  • Upper arms
  • Chin and neck

Liposuction can be a valuable tool for breast reduction, including gynecomastia treatment for men.

What are the advantages of outpatient liposuction?

North Texas Cosmetic Surgery performs liposuction on an outpatient basis, which is possible with tumescent anesthesia instead of general anesthesia. This is called an awake surgery, and it has several benefits you should consider.

Compared to traditional liposuction with general anesthesia, outpatient liposuction with tumescent anesthesia offers:

  • Less postoperative pain
  • Minimal blood loss
  • Lower costs
  • Fewer risks
  • A faster recovery

Dr. Greenberg gives detailed aftercare instructions and may prescribe medication to help you manage postoperative discomfort. You can expect to return to work in just 48 hours.

How does fat transfer with liposuction work?

You don’t have to stop at liposuction for body contouring. In fact, you can use the removed fat to your advantage.

Dr. Greenberg specializes in several fat transfer procedures, which use liposuction to remove fat before he processes the fat cells and places them elsewhere. Depending on your body proportion goals, you can use your fat for a custom breast augmentation or Brazilian butt lift.
