A Fat Transfer to the Buttocks Is the Safest Strategy for a Brazilian Butt Lift

News of Brazilian butt lifts gone bad makes for sensational headlines, but it also raises serious concerns. Exercise alone will not give some women the well-rounded derrières and narrow waists that have been popularized by the Kardashian clan. To achieve that sexy shape, Alan Greenberg, M.D., founder of North Texas Cosmetic Surgery, recommends a fat transfer to the buttocks. He also encourages women to research the options, risks and providers before making a decision.

Why a fat transfer to the buttocks beats the alternatives

Last summer a woman in Dallas died at a storefront salon after having a “silicone-type substance” injected into her buttocks. A former Miss Argentina died in 2009 from a pulmonary embolism after an injected “liquid” traveled to her lungs and brain. There have been numerous other horror stories of patients dying from botched butt lifts.

Anyone considering the procedure should know about the following options:

  • A fat transfer to the buttocks: Excess fat from a patient’s abdomen, lower back or thighs is liposuctioned, treated and then reused to sculpt a behind that looks and feels natural. Be warned that inexperienced doctors have accidentally injected fat into arteries.
  • Implants: Solid silicone implants can be surgically inserted under the gluteus maximus muscles. Implants provide a precise shape but some shift over time. The surgery is highly invasive, and the foreign object could be rejected.
  • Fillers: Although possible, injecting sufficient quantities of medical-grade fillers is cost-prohibitive. Most botched butt lifts involve liquid silicone or other substances, which can harden or may migrate to the brain, lungs or heart.

Board certification is more than a title

In order to become certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) to perform body, breast and extremity surgery, Dr. Greenberg undertook rigorous exams and has performed more than 1,000 surgeries. He also holds a board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Adding to patient safety, the ABCS requires that its physicians practice in surgical facilities that offer the following:

  • Qualified trained and experienced support staff
  • A fully qualified anesthesiologist or anesthetist
  • A clean, fully equipped and accredited operating room
  • Adequate personnel and equipment to respond to emergency situations
