As the warm weather gets into full swing, you and your family are likely enjoying outdoor activities. Baseball games, swimming and long days at the beach are all great ways to spend time together. Dr. Alan Greenberg and the team at North Texas Cosmetic Surgery want to ensure that you and your loved ones stay safe during the summer months by providing helpful hints.

Tips for Summer Survival

With the right preparation, you and your family can have a blast without risking your health. Keep these suggestions in mind:

Watch out for water

Adult supervision is key to preventing water-related injuries or drownings. Do not let your children swim alone; instead use the buddy system so that they swim in pairs. Make sure your kids have swimming lessons with a certified instructor, but don’t think these lessons completely alleviate the need for diligence around the water.

Protect yourself from the sun

When you go out, make sure to use a sunscreen that offers UVA and UVB protection with an SPF of at least 30. Because the sun’s harmful rays can also reach your eyes, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are also a good idea. Limiting your time outside between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. will also reduce your risks for overexposure. Too much time in the sun and/or inadequate protection can result in skin damage, premature aging and increased chance for skin cancer, so be smart.

Know your limits

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can result if you overdue your time in the sun. Before going out, make sure to drink plenty of water and re-hydrate frequently while you are outside. Try to plan activities in the early morning or evening when temperatures cool off. If you start to feel sick, get out of the sun and rest in a cool place.

At North Texas Cosmetic Surgery, we want our patients to enjoy the summer weather. Being proactive in your decisions will ensure that you and your loved ones have a wonderful time together.
